The known baptisms of Thomas-9's children occurred between 1687 and 1697at St Dunstan, Stepney. It is probable therefore that he was born between 1650 and 1670 but could be earlier. There is only one suitable baptism at St Dunstan :
m 16Feb1641 Ringan SHORT & Isabell JOBSON at St George Southwark [no extra info in register]
B 3Sep1642 Isabell SHORT wife of Ringing Short of Prusons Island [Wapping] at
St Dunstan Stepney
m 18May1643 Ringan SHORT & Elizabeth HILL at St George, Southwark [no extra info in register]
C 10Mar1650 Jane d Ringing
SHORT of Kingstreet, mariner, & Elizabeth uxor, 7 days
C 27May1652 Thomas s Ringen
SHORT of Foxes Lane mariner & Elizabeth uxor, 1 day
d 1653-54 Ringen SHORT died beyond the seas (Acts of
Administration)
The records show that Thoms' father, Ringan, was a mariner who died shortly after Thomas was born. Ringen is a Scandinavian surname but no other Ringen records found.
The baptism of Thomas to Richard and Mary 12Feb1657 at St Dunstan, sometimes indexed as SHORT was actually to SHORTHOSE in the original register
A Thomas SHORT was married in Stepney in 1656.
But no children of this marriage have been identified
anywhere.
m 12May1656 Thomas Short 30 & Jane Mayhew 20
This
record comes from an index, and the original has not been seen (The
marriage register for Stepney St Dunstan is missing 1653-58):
A Thomas SHORTE died
in 1669 and his will names his wife Margaret and
son Thomas. He was a clothworker
and citizen of London. The will was proved on
28 May by Margaret. No other address is given, but being wealthy
enough to make a will, he may be the Thomas SHORTE of Christopher
Alley listed in the Hearth Tax for Tower Hamlets (undated c1670) with 9 hearths.
This number of hearths indicates a relatively wealthy man so perhaps he is
the Thomas SHORTE who made the 1969 wills. His son Thomas would have been of age to inherit
so born before 1648. He could be the Thomas who married Jane Walbeck in 1686 though he
would have been at least 38 at marriage.
Neither the marriage of Thomas and Margaret nor the baprism of their son Thomas has been
identified. The Thomas who married Margaret Wright widow at St Dunstan in
1626 was a mariner, so not the Thomas of the will
Thus there are only two known Thomas Short born at an appropriate time but of opposites in wealth:
the son of Ringen Short. Ringen was a mariner not a weaver, but Thomas was baptised at St Dunstan. Thomas named his second daughter Elizabeth - after his mother?
son of Thomas citizen and clothworker. Thomas was in the right trade, but location uncertain - possibly Tower Hamlets. Baptism not found.
Whether either of these is the correct Thomas is uncertain, but option 1 seems more likely at present. St Dunstan parish records might throw more light
It is presently assumed that Thomas-8 was baptised at St Dunstan in 1691, son of Thomas, weaver of Pettycoat Lane and Jane. Other baptisms to Thomas and Jane have been found starting in 1687. Only one suitable marriage has been found to Thomas and Jane prior to 1690:
m 7Jul1686 Thomas SHORT & Jane WALBECK at Allhallows London Wall
there is no extra information in the parish register, but the name and date suggests that this is the correct marriage, though Allhallows is over a mile from Stepney
C 18Mar1687 Martha d Thomas & Jane SHORT, weaver, Nicholas St, ? days old
C 9Mar1689 Elizabeth d Thomas & Jane SHORT, weaver, Phenix St, 16? days old
C 6Dec1691 Thomas s Thomas & Jane SHORT, weaver, Pettycoat Lane, weaver ? days old
C 2Dec1694 William s Thomas & Jane SHORT, weaver, Pellam St, 12 days old
C 16Dec1697 Jane d Thomas & Jane SHORT, weaver, Pellam St, 1 day
C 19Jun1701 Rebecca d Thomas & Jane SHORT, weaver, Pellam St, 1 day
Burials of Thomas Short at St Dunstan in 1724, 1734, 1744
B 15Nov1724 Thomas SHORT of MNT wea [=weaver]
B 18Feb1734 Thomas SHORT of MNT wea [=weaver]
B 27Sep1744 Thomas SHORT of BG died at Guy's Hospital 40 consumption
it is suggested that Thomas -8 died in 1724, leaving the 1734 burial as a possibility for Thomas-9 though were he born in 1652 he would be 82 at death
